a Newnes Plateau canyon

18th May 2003

Trip Notes

This canyon is a narrow, dry (mostly) canyon on the edge of the Newnes Plateau. The canyon itself and the walks in and out are fairly short, making for a fairly easy and fun day day out.

The last few km from where we parked the cars, were covered on mountain bikes, which was a fun start and end to the trip.

The trail out finishes atop a lookout offering great views into the Newnes end of the Wolgan Valley.

Stashing the bikes in the bush, we then followed a gully for a short way, down into the top of the canyon.

The canyon is really narrow and straight and drops fairly deeply into the rugged rocky escarpment.

There is only one abseil in the canyon itself. And there's also a couple of small drops that are easily climbed down. One of these drops into a short deep pool that slopes steeply up to a sandy bank about a metre or two away. How far you can jump from the bottom of the climb determines how dry you stay. Or not...

Towards the end of the canyon, the narrow slot opens into a sort of amphitheatre section, before narrowing into another narrow slot and exiting above a final 25m abseil down to the bottom of the cliff line.

Below the canyon, it's a short walk/scramble around to a narrow gully which took us back up to the top of the escarpment.

From here we spent the rest of the afternoon exploring along the top of the escarpment, looking for any other interesting gullies or canyons and enjoying the spectacular views to be had along the top of the cliffs.

Then it was off to the pub for a feed and a review of the day, via Dave's digital video camera!

Camera info

All photos were taken with a Canon Powershot G1, and for canyon and low light shots I used a tiny little bendy leg tripod.
